Buying Tips/Buying Newborn Clothes

Buying Newborn Clothes

Babies' Clothes are often a great and common gift that is given during a baby shower, or once the baby has arrived. Rather than relying on gifts alone, though, it can be a good start to simply create a ‘base’ level of practical clothing for your newborn.

Aesthetics are always appreciated but when it comes to a newborn baby, function over form is a good mantra. Aim for baby clothing that can be easily put on and removed. Natural fibres such as cotton can be ideal for newborn baby skin. Read clothing labels and avoid flammable garments.

The below selection is a solid start to building up your baby’s wardrobe:

Singlets (5+)
Short Sleeve one piece suits (5+)
Long sleeve one piece suits (5+)
Leggings (3+)
Cardigans (2+)
Socks (5+)
Mittens (2+)
Beanies (2+)
Muslin or other wraps (5+)

There tends to be a great deal of variation with newborn babies, particularly in length and weight. Another hot tip is that newborn babies can have some weight loss in the weeks after birth before they suckle correctly and start to regain weight. It may pay to have some items in sizes on either side of the babies estimated size.
