We spoke with Baby Mode owner, Ray, and found out a little bit more about his fantastic discount clearance centre.
YOU ALSO OWN BABY MODE’S DISCOUNT CLEARANCE CENTRE - TELL US A BIT ABOUT HOW THAT STORE CAME TO BE AND HOW IT DIFFERS FROM YOUR OTHER STORES.
The discount clearance centre came to be when we relocated the Sunshine store to the new super store footprint.
We still had that site there and the idea was that we wanted to create another element to the Baby Mode shopping experience where we are able to offer our customers really great deals by capitalising on end of product line runs and discontinued items.
It also enables us to, when an item becomes discontinued, easily clear that through another avenue of our business - rather than it being in the core business - and allows the core business to then move onto the next new thing.
It is catering to a different customer. Certain customers have certain priorities of things that they hold in high regard.
Some want the best that they can find for a particular category. And then there are other situations and circumstances where there looking for a deal, they are looking for a bargain and they don’t mind buying something that may be discontinued and is no longer a current line, but is significantly cheaper.
The products that we offer at our clearance store are up to 60% off and most items are 40-50% off normal retail pricing.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR TIME OF YEAR PARENTS WILL FIND THE BEST BARGAINS?
For us, it is a very consistent buying pattern. We understand that when our consumers shop, its not an impulse buy.
It is something that they plan and they want to experience it and enjoy it through the whole pregnancy period and obviously they will prioritise themselves what needs to be done early, what gets done half way through the pregnancy and what gets done towards the end. We are very mindful of that and we offer discounted pricing pretty much every day of the week across every category.
That does change from time to time, but as an overall experience for a consumer shopping at Baby Mode, they will see value every day.
It’s not like they have to time their run to when they make their decision, or when they decide to make their purchase or do their lay-by. It is very rare that we have such big fluctuation in pricing, whereas some of the department stores or some of the big chain stores will work in cycles – sale cycle, non-sale cycle, sale cycle, non-sale cycle and so on.
We tend to find that, that puts a lot of pressure on pregnant women as well as they may not be ready to buy!
They might actually make a bad decision or a bad choice because they feel like they have to act now because it’s not going to be that price for long.
We are very consistent with our pricing and we offer the best pricing we can offer on that day, every day.
That does vary depending on opportunities as well but a lot of that opportunistic buying does go through our clearance centre anyway.

We are always looking to expand and to spread our love so to speak.
We have three stores now, plus an online store, and with our Sunshine store we get people coming from Bentleigh, Dandenong – we draw from a really big area!
It has been mainly through word of mouth where people have said they have had a good experience here. If you have a look at our website we have some really good, positive feedback that comes back through there.
Shopping in this environment for babies can be a bit daunting and overwhelming. We have a good reputation for creating a happy and fun vibe throughout our stores thus, making our consumers really comfortable in our store environments.
People spread that, and we tend to draw from well outside where we would normally expect to get our customers from. Having said that, we would like to be closer to them! We have plans to get closer to the customers who actually go out of their way and travel up to 45 minutes to get to one of our store currently.
