The Tinitrader team love coming across unique and clever concepts from around Australia. Fly Babee is one of these and will certainly be a brand you won’t be forgetting any time soon!
For so many parents, flying with babies is an experience rather forgotten.
Fly Babee is the world’s first canopy with the ability to attach to an inflight bassinet. The canopy blocks out, distractions and movement for the baby, helping them to sleep in the most uncomfortable of conditions. The canopy is a heaven sent for parents on regular flights and can additionally be attached onto a stroller for everyday use. Emma has revolutionized travelling for young families with a simple and affordable innovation that will no doubt help families for years to come.
1. We just love the Fly Babee and to find out more about this amazing brand we caught up with Emma to delve a little deeper.
Fly Babee has a unique story, tell us a little bit about the path that led you to what you are doing today? I’m originally from the UK and I waited until my first child was 5 ½ months to fly. I was terrified of that first flight and quite rightly so!!! The sleep routine that I had worked so hard to establish was turned upside down and Aimee was awake for almost the duration of the 24 hour flight. The inflight bassinet I had was right below a TV screen, lights flashing on and off and people constantly passing by. I eventually got to London and as I greeted my Mum I remember saying “Well I won’t be flying with a baby again in a hurry! – Absolute nightmare!”
During that holiday, my Mum was suddenly taken ill and was diagnosed with Cancer. It was completely out of nowhere and she was given just 9 months to live. I had to relocate to the UK to care of her in her final months and it meant her being around her only grandchild.
My husband had to stay home to run his business and missed our daughter so much. I ended up travelling with a baby back and forth four times that year! In an attempt to help Aimee sleep better during flights, I carted around single sheets and masking tape and set up a canopy over the bassinet to help block out all the inflight action. She would drag it off or the masking tape would fail and it would fall on her and of course wake her… nothing was effective!
When my Mum passed away and the grieving eased a little, I kept mentioning how frustrating flying with babies were for people. I wondered - could travelling be made easy? Lying in bed one night my hubby said…. “You know, we should just design something and get it out there”….. And so we did!
2. What sets Fly Babee apart?
For one – no one else out there has offered a solution to this problem. But we always knew that flying with babies was a niche market so we really wanted to ensure Fly Babee had an every-day dual purpose. I think this resulted in it being one of the best stroller covers on the market.
There is a lot of media attention out there talking about not covering prams and strollers with heavy blankets and wrap due to the risk of over-heating. Fly Babee is a pop-up dome that creates a great deal of space for babies and toddlers to kick around and most importantly, it provides true cross-flow ventilation. It’s 100% breathable, blocks 97% of light and offers a sun protection factor of 50+.
Essentially it gives mums freedom to do what the need to do, when they need to do it without breaking their child’s all-important sleep routine.
3. What do you get up to in your spare time?
I never have much of it, but I love to stay active so when I have a spare hour without the kids I dash to the gym for circuit training or yoga. On the weekends, we take the kids bike & scooter riding, check out local events and in the evenings, we try to have the odd date night or catch up with friends.
What is your secret to striking a work-life balance? I’m still working on that one. We’ve recently finished building our house and now that we’ve moved in things have calmed down a little. I have found that Smart Phones can be the root of all evil when it comes to work-life balance. For a while there, both my husband and I had them at the dinner table, playing with the kids, out walking… they were constantly in our hands. We are now turning them off in the evening and making the effort to leave them behind now and again. I don’t want to miss those funny things that kids say because I’m distracted when I don’t have to be!
4. What are your goals for Fly Babee?
I want to take Fly Babee worldwide. There’s no reason that Fly Babee shouldn’t be on prams and flying the skies all over the world. Eventually I’ll be working on expanding the product range.
5. What are you the most grateful for in your life?
Health – my health, my children’s health and my husband’s health. I have a beautiful life tracking just the way I want it and I pray that illness doesn’t get in the way of living our dreams…. To see my kids grow, flourish and marry and play with grandkids.
6. What are the most important lessons you have learned from your kids?
I love the way kids simplify everything. Things don’t need to be difficult and they have taught me to try and look for the straighter, shorter path in everything I do….. And not to forget to laugh along the way!
