Are you swaddling your baby properly?
For years, parents have been using the swaddling technique as a way to soothe and calm their baby. Creating a cosy and warm environment, much like the mother’s womb, both parents and professionals agree that swaddling is an effective way of getting a restless infant to sleep.
However, there are concerns from medical experts that if not performed in a safe way, swaddling can lead to unforeseen consequences of affecting the development of the babies hips and even to the point of dislocation.
What is hip dysplasia?
Hip Dysplasia is caused when the bones of the hip joint are not aligned correctly. This prevents the hip joint from functioning properly and leads to the joint wearing out much faster than normal. Hip Dysplasia is a “silent” condition that means pain is not normally felt until much later stages of growth and hard to detect.
Numerous studies have shown that wrapping a baby too tightly in the “papoose” position, where their legs are held straight, can lead to hip dysplasia and dislocation. When this practice was stopped, the frequency of dislocation dropped significantly.
As a result of these findings, doctors are now recommending parents leave enough room for their legs to move freely, ensuring enough room for healthy hip development.
ErgoPouch Swaddles - IHDI approved
The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) recently deemed Australian-owned ErgoPouch swaddles, sleep sacks and sleep suits as “hip-healthy” products, as they encourage healthy hip development.
Meeting the institutes strict requirements for hip health in babies, ErgoPouch products are ergonomically designed to allow for babies to move their legs comfortably and adopt the ‘frog leg’ position.
