To begin with, the space had gorgeous features including an old fireplace and antique French doors. How did you go about incorporating these aspects into the design practically?
The fireplace is such a stunning feature - I knew I wanted to celebrate its character by using it to bring some fun into the space. The super fun and retro candy stripe Zilverblauw Wallpaper from Little Muse & Maker was the perfect way to dress the chimney and create an upbeat tone for the rest of the room. The custom neon soda light by Neon Poodle was an extension of this upbeat retro theme and was chosen to create a bright, fun punch to set off the space, while allowing the beautiful wallpaper and fireplace to be the hero of the room. Although beautiful, the fireplace created some design challenges as it impacted the furniture layout and created two small ‘dead' spaces on either side. To combat this and make the best use of the space, I created a chill out and reading nook on one side of the fireplace and drawing and craft zone on the other which turned out to be the best decision as the girls use (and LOVE!) both zones every single day. We were also lucky enough to have stunning French Doors to show off so I knew I had to make sure that everything had it’s place and didn’t jut into the door space in any way - this combined with the fireplace really dictated the bed and chest of draw positioning.
Two little clients means two little personalities! How did you go about creating a theme they would both love?
We really wanted to create a unique, bright and happy space to suit the girl’s fun loving (sometimes crazy!) and bubbly personalities - something that would provide them with different activity zones, celebrate the character of the room and especially the beautiful fireplace. They are both so fun and full of life and we wanted their bedroom to capture their crazy, beautiful spirits and encourage them to be themselves.
What is your favourite thing about designing kids' bedrooms?
The energy, innocence and pure joy of a happy child is a very precious thing and a great source of inspiration for me when designing children’s rooms. Making children feel happy and free to be themselves in their very own space is definitely my greatest reward.
